A Guide to Squishy Toy Types

Squish Hubb | Materials textures and styles

A peach that slowly puffs back into shape, a jelly-like cube that resists your squeeze, and a fluffy character you can hug all offer a different kind of squish. Knowing what makes them different can help you choose a toy for your collection, a gift, or simply a texture you enjoy.

This guide follows the 15 categories in the Squish Hubb Squish Types tool. Some describe construction, others describe feel, features, size, or appearance. They overlap: a single toy can be slow-rising, scented, miniature, and shaped like a strawberry. Start with how you want it to feel, then check the individual product details.

How the main constructions differ

Slow rising foam

Foam squishies compress under your fingers and gradually recover their shape. Many use polyurethane foam, but confirm the material on the specific listing or packaging. Bread, fruit, desserts, and character designs make this a visually varied category. Recovery speed and firmness can differ even among toys that look similar. Treat foam gently rather than assuming it can stretch like a rubbery toy.

Filled squeeze toys

These toys have a flexible outer shell around a movable filling. The filling shifts as you squeeze, creating a different experience from compressing a piece of foam. Schylling says most NeeDoh products use a thermoplastic rubber, or TPR, exterior with polyvinyl alcohol, or PVA, inside. That description does not apply to every product in the range or to other brands. [1]

Firm jelly style squishies

Jelly-style is a useful description of feel, not an ingredient list. These toys can offer a dense, resistant squeeze. NeeDoh Nice Cube and Gumdrop are examples to explore, but their exact construction should be checked separately. Schylling identifies maltose as the Nice Cube filling; this does not make the toy edible. [1, 2]

Plush squishies

Plush squishies combine a fabric exterior with soft stuffing. Their appeal comes from a compressible, huggable body rather than a foam surface or a sealed filling. Squishmallows are one familiar example. Fabric, filling, and washing directions vary, so use the care label for the specific toy. [3]

Textures and special features

Surface texture can change the experience as much as the shape or filling. Look beyond the photograph and read descriptions of resistance, coating, and sound. A glossy appearance alone cannot tell you whether a toy is silicone, TPR, or another material.

Textured squishies

Bumps, grooves, ridges, and raised patterns give your fingers something to explore while squeezing. A textured surface may be added to different constructions. NeeDoh Gumdrop is an example with a distinctive exterior. Choose this category if surface detail interests you more than a completely smooth finish. [2]

Shaggy squishies

Shaggy designs have flexible strands or projections extending from the body. They add movement and a different touch sensation. Shaggy NeeDoh illustrates this style. The strands are part of the toy, so handle them as directed rather than pulling them off. [4]

Fuzzy squishies

A fuzzy or velvet-like finish creates a soft surface feel over a squishy body. Fuzzy does not necessarily mean the toy is a stuffed animal: a coated squeeze toy can have this finish too. NeeDoh Fuzz Ball Flower Power is one example. Check cleaning directions because a surface coating may need different care from smooth rubbery toys. [5]

Crunchy squishies

Crunchy designs add a crunch-like sound or tactile effect when compressed. NeeDoh Snow Ball Crunch is an example of this category. The sound does not identify the filling, and crunchy toys are not necessarily as quiet as smooth squeeze toys. Consider where you plan to use one if noise matters to you. [6]

Color changing squishies

Some toys change their visible color as you squeeze or stretch them. Color Changing NeeDoh demonstrates this feature. The effect is a product feature, not a separate material family. Follow the maker’s directions rather than using heat, chemicals, or other experiments to force a change. [7]

Scented squishies

Scent adds another element to a toy, often paired with a food or character design. For example, iBLOOM lists different scents for its Soft Croissant variants. Scented does not tell you the construction, and fragrance strength can change over time. If you prefer toys without fragrance, check the listing rather than assuming an unmentioned scent means unscented. [8]

Sizes themes and collecting styles

Once you have an idea of your preferred feel, use size and design to narrow your search. These categories can help organize a collection, but they do not establish what is inside a toy.

Mini collectible squishies

Miniatures offer small figures for compact displays and collections. Squish-a-longs Mini-Squish are one example. Mini is a size description rather than a material specification. Check actual measurements and age guidance, especially when figures include tiny accessories or attachments. [9]

Jumbo squishies

Larger toys provide a broader squeeze or hug and can become a display centerpiece. Super NeeDoh is an example of a larger squeeze toy. Sellers use jumbo differently, so compare dimensions rather than relying on the label alone. A large foam toy and a large plush toy can still feel very different. [10]

Food shaped squishies

Toast, doughnuts, strawberries, cakes, and drink cartons turn familiar foods into playful designs. iBLOOM’s bread and dessert ranges provide examples. This is a theme that can appear across different constructions and textures. A bread shape does not guarantee a slow rise, and a fruit design does not guarantee a scent. [8]

Animal and character squishies

Cats, bears, bunnies, fantasy creatures, and original characters give a collection personality. Decide whether the character or the feel matters more to you, then compare both. Similar-looking characters can be sold as foam figures, filled toys, or plush, with different care needs.

Surprise and blind pack squishies

Surprise packs conceal some or all of the figure or color until opened. This is a packaging and collecting format, not a construction. Read the series details to understand what may be included, whether duplicates are possible, and whether the item you want can be selected directly.

Find your preferred combination

Try describing your ideal toy in a short phrase, such as “small, smooth, and firm” or “soft, scented, and food-shaped.” In the Squish Types tool, search a word or filter by category, material family, feel, or feature. Open a result’s care and source section for a manufacturer reference. A “varies” material entry means the category includes different constructions; check the exact product before purchasing.

Choosing and caring for your squishies

Use the product label as your final guide. Check dimensions, age recommendations, fragrance, materials, and any accessories. If a listing leaves out a detail you care about, ask the seller or manufacturer. Photos and terms such as jelly, mochi, soft, or premium are not a substitute for a material description.

Keep foam away from tearing and excessive stretching. Keep filled toys sealed, and stop using one if its shell is damaged or leaking. Follow the sewn-in care label for plush and the maker’s directions for fuzzy coatings. A cleaning method suitable for one construction may damage another.

Keep squishies away from mouths, sharp objects, and heat. Food-shaped toys are not food. Follow the age label and small-parts warnings for miniature figures, chains, and accessories. These are toy and collecting categories; enjoying a texture does not establish a medical or therapeutic benefit.
